Ever wonder what it is like to play college football? The playbook, the classes, the practices, the fame, the popularity etc. Well its not all guts and glory. There truely is a lot of blood sweat and tears. Can you imagine waking up at 5:30am for a morning work out, during your off season? Or could you imagine waking up around 6:00am to make it to the locker room by 7:20 am for checkin for morning practice before class? Or meeting a couple times a day to discuss football plays and watch game film on your opponents?
Well as a 4 years starter for what is formerly known as the "Atlantic 10 Conference" I will tell you that those are some of the things we go thru. And thats the on field side of it. Imagine going to class all day then practice right after on days when you have a P.M practice, then after that practice going to an over crowded dining hall for approx. 30 minutes before you have to go to a mandatory study hall depending on your GPA or if your just a freshman.
What about football camp? 2 weeks before anyone else reports to campus not a girl in sight just you, your football team, coaches and athletic trainers. Practicing twice a day in 80-90 degree heat depending on where you live also known as 2 a days. With meetings about 3 times thru out the day and when your finally free after your last meeting you got about 30 mins just to chill out before the mandatory bed check...Thats what it means to play college football and thats preseason. Now during season it gets better, I'll tell you why:
1)Your season has started> you get to hit an opponent instead of your teamate in practice
2)More freedom> less mandatory meetings, no mandatory breakfast checks or bed checks
3)Other students on campus > girls
4)Some partying
5)Some traveling, flying to away games meeting people in airports "do you play football"
6)Signing autographs>that was big made me feel good
7)Your scholarship comes in after season starts = more partying lol
8)You get the freedom to see your family because you couldn't during football camp
Those are just a few of the reasons. But over all there is a lot to deal with playing college football some referr to it as adversity, and its funny because when you think thats tough and your 4-5years go by (depending on red-shirt) your coach wishes you well and tells you about your next challenge thats going to be even harder and thats "entering the real world."
All in all my personal most important thing I got out of playing college football is my degree. I met great people and I learned a whole lot in and out the classroom and on and off the field.
